Caravanserai were great forts along the Silk Roads where weary travellers and merchants could spend the night, safe from the freezing desert nights, scorching days, bandits, and where they could water their camels, barter their goods, smoke a hookah and get coffee and food. The motels of the Silk Roads. I have always imagined the relief of arrival, the bustling activity, exotically dressed travellers, clinking of camels, smell of coffee, greetings and hagglings. I’ve seen several, mostly in ruins. This is my own reconstruction.
